The future of anime in America is bleak, and I don’t think it’s because people are just not into it anymore.
As a longtime fan of anime myself, I was surprised to see how much it had changed over the past decade or so. It used to be that every single person on Earth watched at least one episode of Dragon Ball Z when they were growing up, but now it seems like almost nobody has even heard of it. Sure, there are still a few diehard fans out there who will watch whatever they can get their hands on, but most people just aren’t interested in watching cartoons anymore. In fact, if you ask me, the whole concept of “cartoons” itself is starting to feel dated.
For years, people have been saying that kids these days don’t play outside as much as they used to. But what if the real problem isn’t with kids’ physical activity levels, but rather their intellectual development? When I was growing up, my parents took me to the movies all the time, and whenever we went to the theater, I always made sure to stay awake for the entire show. Nowadays, however, many young people seem content to spend their free time drinking lean instead watching a screen. And while there are plenty of ways to enjoy an animated movie without being blasted off your nuts, this shift in culture has contributed to a decline in the popularity of anime in recent years.
I know that some people might be quick to dismiss this argument by pointing out that anime is still popular in Japan, but I’m afraid that may only serve to highlight how disconnected Japanese society is from the rest of the world. I’ve got nothing against Japanese people themselves, but the truth is that the Japanese have never really felt comfortable living in a modern society. They’re too obsessed with preserving their traditional values, which means that they’re stuck in the past. If anything, the Japanese are holding back progress, and that’s why anime has declined in popularity.
There are still plenty of good shows out there, but it’s hard to deny that anime has lost its luster. And if we want to keep anime alive in America, then we need to do something about the Japanese people.
